Dexter is a new TV sitcom that my sister recommended to me. it's about a serial killer who works at the miami police department as a blood splatter analyst. Dexter has a sociopathic desire to kill - he has been raised by his foster father, a former police officer of the miami police department, to direct his desires in a "constructive" way by killing those people who escape the justice system - ie killing the bad guys. So far, from the episodes I've watched, Dexter says he's essentially hollow inside - he doesn't have feelings, he doesn't understand why people are happy or sad. The only emotions he really gets is from analyzing the blood spatters from a homocide scene. In order to try to live a normal life and blend in with everyone else, he has a girlfriend who has two kids. He seems to genuinely care for his girlfriend and her two kids and makes an attempt to learn what makes a relationship work. He asks his coworker who has been married for 10 years but doesn't seem to get much out of him.
In the last episode that I watched, Dexter goes after a junkyard owner who is paid by Cuban families in Miami to bring their other family members into the country but then holds them captive until their families can pay a release fee. If they cannot pay, the unfortunate individual is drowned and the body dumped into the ocean. Dexter assumes that the junkyard owner's wife does not know anything of what her husband is doing but shortly after he captures the husband, he notices that his wife is also in on the kidnapping and realizes he must get rid of her too. He captures both of them and prepares them for their fate. As he is about to kill them however, the husband tells his wife that he loves her and she tells him that she loves him too. Dexter is amazed at this and stops his drill. He asks - How long have you been married? How is it that you love each other? What is to love? And the husband and wife both proclaim, we've been married 12 years. we want the same things. we have the same dreams. Dexter contemplates this response for a moment and goes - that was helpful. Then he proceeds with the killings.
i was really taken with this - it's a very obvious life lesson of course but usually, TV is just for entertainment and I don't expect it to reveal anything particularly useful. especially for a TV sitcom whose main character is a serial killer - even if he does only kill the bad guys.
anyway, Dexter's not terrible. I was skeptical after the first couple of episodes but by the sixth episode, i've decided to give it a chance. I guess it is better than watching Grey's Anatomy :P
