there's this topic of identity and i feel this is an important topic to blog about particularly because i'm about to enter into a new stage in life where (potentially) my name will change -- How will this change my identity?
i am a Hui daughter. i am someone's younger sister. and someone's older sister. i am an overachiever. i was someone's girlfriend. then i was someone's ex-girlfriend. i am someone's friend. i am someone who sins. i am an engineer in the corporate world. i am an alumni of UW. i am now someone's fiancee and soon to be someone's wife. one day perhaps i will be someone's mother. or grandmother.
at some point in my life, i started getting tired of all these different identities and keeping track and trying to meet of all the cultural or social expectations which come along with all these different identities. how am i supposed to be a good sister? a supportive friend? a diligent student? a hard-working employee? a loving fiancee? when the expectations of two different identities conflict, which one has priority?
with God's grace, He has helped me to work out my identity issues. i have learned that i left out one very important identity : i am a daughter of God. i am a follower of Christ. i am in Christ. i am a disciple and lover of Jesus.
this is the only identity that I now have and that truly matters and makes a difference. yes, i am still all those things that i mentioned above, but they don't define who i am. i believe this has been essential for me to understand and to realize over the past year especially now when preparing for marriage because marriage is difficult. Patience, kindness, goodness, forgiveness, extending and receiving of grace that comes from Jesus are all needed in a lifelong marriage and these traits are exhibited most by people whose identity is in Christ.
So how will my identity change on my wedding day? It won't! Marriage will be tough but I look forward to the ways in which God will use the marriage to continue to redeem myself and Hmma
